Mozambique has a penitentiary population of approximately 20,000 people, 6,000 of whom are awaiting trial. Only 3% are women, and 16% are young people between the ages of 16 and 21. Following the proclamation of a state of emergency on March 31, it was necessary to find a rapid form of intervention to prevent the spread of Covid-19 within the penitentiary institutions. In time, REFORMAR, a civil society organization, proposed to SERNAP, the national service of penitentiary administration, a campaign to collect scraps of fabric donated by civil society and start the production of masks inside the penitentiary institutions. The tailoring laboratories of the prisons immediately came alive and began a massive production of masks at the rate of a fight against time. The objective of the campaign "TODOS PROTEGIDOS" was to ensure that the prison population and penitentiary agents have the same rights as other citizens when it comes to the prevention of Covid-19. The prison, at this juncture, has been transformed into a "living body", to quote Franco Basaglia, providing itself with the workforce and professional qualifications to respond to a health emergency. These photos document the development of this experience in three penitentiary institutions in Maputo: the juvenile prison of Boane, the central prison of Machava and the female prison of Ndavela. This documentation aim to make you aware of a reality that is often forgotten because it is not visible, but on which the same emergency conditions that we have all experienced have fallen.
